Review - Kali Yuga by Solar Apple Quarktette feat. Ian Carr

This excellent record was pressed up 800 on vinyl only and released at the end of 2002. Distribution is through Kudos Records at: www.kudosrecords.co.uk - Ian Carr is featured on two of the three tracks but mainly on the Kali Yuga (original mix)track (as opposed to the breakstyle mix version). The title track of this single weighs in at just over 7 mins and is in the jazz dance idiom. Playing muted trumpet, over a repeating theme Ian Carr sound very Miles-esque and the whole effect is Miles meets Weather Report. The bass is extremely effective and sounds 'real'. Solar Apple Quarktette (or SAQ) comprises Richard E, dj, musician and film maker and Mr Christy, musician and "expert knob twiddler". Whilst this record is uncompromisingly contemporary, it is very jazzy too and Ian proves yet again that jazz fusion overcomes pretty much all musical barriers. Anyone needing a copy on CD should contact Richard E at richarde@furtherout.co.uk
