Images - Some Ian Carr, Nucleus and related images

Two new photos of Ian Carr have been generously offered for display on this website by Aki Takeda who took them at the 100 Club in London during the early 1980s. The first shows Ian with fellow trumpeter Henry Lowther taken at a benefit gig for Michael Garrick on 21 September 1980 and the second is of Nucleus with John Marshall on drums and unknown bass player.

Music Outside by Ian Carr.

Probably the greatest book on contemporary British jazz ever written and a second edition has just been republished by Northway (January 2008) for the first time in 35 years. This new edition includes an additional updating chapter by Roger Cotterrell. Contains excellent photographs and a superb discography. It has been described by King Crimson biographer Sid Smith in his KCNN diary for 14th May 2003 as "a fascinating overview of contemporary jazz in the UK. Importantly, it described the emergence and evolution of a musical vocabulary which wasn't entirely dependent on the USA for its legitimacy". Smith then goes on to say how he managed to track down a copy of 'Music Outside' (he had lost his own copy and had to borrow a copy for his research), however it was for sale for "well over £100"!
