Ian Carr has been at the forefront of jazz for five decades. He has been a major force behind three world class bands (The Rendell Carr Quintet, his own band, the Montreux prize winning Nucleus and The United Jazz and Rock Ensemble) and has contributed to many other recordings and projects including ones assembled by his friend, the late Neil Ardley, of which his New Jazz Orchestra played a significant part in the development of British modern jazz. Ian Carr is also a leading jazz writer and biographer of both Miles Davis and Keith Jarrett. He is a music teacher and contributed as jazz consultant to two films by Mike Dibb on Miles and Keith Jarrett. Ian Carr is officially one of the world's jazz legends according to the BBC Radio 3 programme of the same name! This discography aims to cover all Ian Carr's recordings including the EmCee Five, The Rendell Carr Quintet, Nucleus, Neil Ardley and the New Jazz Orchestra, The United Jazz and Rock Ensemble and a host of other miscellaneous ones. It aims to disclose all commercial releases (or recordings presumably intended for commercial release), although no attempt has been made to cover all releases of the same record (ie, alternate pressings in various countries) although some have been mentioned. The entries mostly reflect the format of the original release, but occasionally reissue details have been included. There are several other recordings by Ian Carr, unfortunately not yet commercially available, which are held in the British Library's Sound Archive, either recorded by the NSA or the BBC but these have not been listed here. They can be perused by searching the online catalogue of the British Library's Sound Archive
Author's disclaimer: This discography is arranged in (approximate) release date order and not by recording date. There are probably many missing entries, inaccuracies and inconsistencies here, but for the purpose of actually completing this project it needed to be started! Apologies in advance to all concerned.
